It plays an important role in plant growth and development, particularly in the ripening process of fruits such as bananas, mangoes, and papayas.

As fruits begin to ripen, plants produce increasing amounts of ethylene. Ethylene acts as a signaling hormone that triggers various changes in fruit, including color changes, softening of the flesh, and an increase in sweetness.

Some fruits can also release ethylene gas, which may stimulate nearby fruits to ripen more quickly. Therefore, if you want to extend the shelf life of fruits, it is advisable to avoid storing ripe fruits together with unripe fruits.

In agriculture, ethylene is used to control and manage the ripening of fruits after harvest, helping producers plan the transportation and distribution of their produce more effectively. In addition, ethylene plays a role in the shedding of leaves, flowers, and fruits, as well as in the plant’s response to stress and physical damage.

In everyday life, we encounter phenomena related to ethylene more often than we may realize—from fruits ripening at home to the handling and management of produce in packing facilities. Beyond its agricultural applications, ethylene is also an important raw material in the petrochemical industry. It is used to produce plastics such as polyethylene (PE), as well as many other chemical compounds.

Therefore, although ethylene is simply a gas that cannot be seen with the naked eye, it plays an important role in plants, agriculture, and many industries that surround us.

Currently, ethylene can be artificially generated for agricultural use in the form of ethephon, which is widely used in the agricultural sector. It is commonly known as a fruit-ripening agent and is used to increase ethylene levels in fruits, thereby stimulating and accelerating the ripening process.

Image for Example Cr: https://koolkaset.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/LINE_ALBUM_%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B9%E0%B8%9B%E0%B8%9A%E0%B8%B3%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B8%E0%B8%87%E0%B9%80%E0%B8%94%E0%B8%B5%E0%B9%88%E0%B8%A2%E0%B8%A7_251013_1.jpg

What Is Ethylene Gas?
